Our Story

What does “Kaffa” mean?

Kaffa (also spelled Kefa) is a historic region in southwestern Ethiopia and is widely regarded as the birthplace of Arabica coffee. According to Ethiopian tradition, the word “coffee” is believed to have originated from Kaffa, where wild Arabica coffee has grown naturally for centuries.

Legend tells of a goat herder named Kaldi, who discovered coffee after noticing his goats became energetic after eating the berries from a particular tree.

Whether legend or history, Ethiopia remains the genetic home of Arabica coffee and one of the world’s most respected coffee-producing countries.

Today, Ethiopian coffee is prized for its complex flavour, floral aromas, and exceptional quality.

The Origin

Ethiopia, in four facts.

Birthplace of Arabica

Coffea arabica was first found growing wild in the forests of southwestern Ethiopia. Every Arabica tree on earth traces its roots here.

A living coffee culture

Coffee has been grown, brewed and celebrated in Ethiopia longer than anywhere else — and it remains at the centre of daily life.

Unmatched diversity

Ethiopia holds the world’s richest Arabica genetics — thousands of heirloom landrace varieties found nowhere else on the planet.

Grown at altitude

Ethiopian specialty coffee grows at roughly 1,500–2,300 metres, where cool highland air slows ripening and deepens sweetness.
